Mangosteen - The Tropical Delicacy

In parts of Southeast Asia, Mangosteen is referred to as "The Queen of Fruits" because of its many health benefits. Mangosteen is grown in  Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.  The season runs from April to September . Like apples and bananas in the US, in its native regions, the mangosteen is served as a table fruit.

The entire fruit is typically 2.5-7.5 cm in diameter, roughly the size of a tangerine.  Flavor of the white, inner pulp of the mangosteen fruit is highly praised as one of the best of the tropical fruits.

The mangosteen fruit is rich in  Xanthones.  This is a class of plant derived nutrients or "phytonutrients." Xanthones have been demonstrated in numerous scientific studies to have significant nutritional value.  Xanthones provide beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and thrombosis. They are  also found to exhibit strong antioxidant activity, disarm free radicals in the body and enhance and support immune system. Although xanthones exist in small amounts throughout nature, it is found in concentrated amounts in the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit. The pericarp is the reddish case surrounding the white flesh.  There are over 20 known forms of xanthones naturally occurring in the  mangosteen pericarp, the two most widely studied are Alpha Mangostin and Gamma Mangostin.

Mangosteen is gaining in popularity as a delicacy and a fine dessert ingredient. The fruit tastes somewhat like a cross between an orange and a peach, but is fairly mild.  Its delicate flavor blends well  in all beverages. Popular combinations with mangosteen are peach mangosteen,  mangosteen passion fruit, and mangosteen coconut water. It can be used in 100% juices, nectars, ice creams, yogurts, smoothies, salads, sorbets and more.
